The Orb symbolises the Monarchy as defender of the faith and the supreme Governor of the Church of England. During a coronation, the Orb is placed on the Monarch's right hand and then placed on the altar. At the end of the ceremony, the Monarch holds the Orb in the left hand as he/she leaves Westminster Abbey.
