The shield represents the many important battles which took place in early England. Some of the more highly influential examples include the Roman conquests of Britain in 43AD, the Anglo-Saxon invasions of the 5th and 6th centuries and the Norman invasion in 1066. After the Battle of Hastings there was much civil war and conflict with other nations throughout the middle ages.
