The pandemic known to history as the black death entered England between 1347 and 1348. The disease is believed to have been brought into the country by cargo ships harbouring infected rats. By 1349 the outbreak had caused the death of approximately half of England's inhabitants. One of the last outbreaks of the plague was the great plague of London in 1655-1666.
